The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

XP browses the MAC's shared folders, VISTA cannot (asks for username, rejects it)

Asked by dgrrr in Windows Vista, Apple Networking, Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)

We're trying to access folders shared on a Mac 10.4.11 computer, while sitting at a Windows Vista PC.  The sharing on the mac has been done both with system properties and with something called "Sharepoints v3.5.4" (a 3rd party networking / permissions program)

The other MACS can see the printers and folders shared on the MAC server. The Vista computer can SEE it too, AND use it's shared printers, and also SEE the two shared folder names, from the parent folder. But when we click on the shared folders to see inside them, Vista asks for a username and password. We tried several which work on other computers -- none are working.

The Vista firewall is down. The MAC firewall is also DOWN.

Here's what's weird:

On a nearby XP computer on the same network, under "Entire Network", we see the MAC server computer as it's listed under Mac System Preferences - the local name is "Snowball-G4"  / "Snowball-G4.local".  (Macs browse it as "Snowball G4" but on PC's it's "Snowball-G4" with a dash not a space.) Anyway, when the XP computer likewise tries to brows the shared folders on the MAC ("Snowball-G4"), we get the same problem. BUT:
IF we type in the IP of the MAC (192.168.1.2), XP connects, FINE! We see inside the shared folders.

AND then under "entire network" we see the MAC computer listed as a new computer, separate from the "Snowball-G4", sometines as "192.168.1.2", and sometimes as "Snowball G4", without the dash.

HOWEVER -- we can't get the same thing that happened under XP to  happen on the VIsta pc - when we try to browse the subfolders of "192.168.1.2", we get the same popup for username/pw, which don't work.
