Having trouble upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.5

I am trying to upgrade from OSX 10.3.9 to OSX 10.5.

I doubled clicked on the dvd (In this case it happens to be a disk image).  I am prompted to restart the computer the computer to begin the "installation process".  When I do restart the computer the installation process does not proceed at all, its as if I just restarted it normally.

Some background:
This installation disk in question is a "disk image" on my hard drive, a back up of the 10.5 dvd.

Do I need the original 10.5 DVD to complete the upgrade, or is the disk image sufficient?

I am running an ibook with 933 mhz 1.12GB ram and OSX 10.3.9Start Free Trial
