The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

No default gateway missing from DHCP settings of ethernet adapters after reboot

Here is the description of the hardware and the steps I took to resolve the title issue...without success :(

Windows XP Home, Gateway laptop
Lynksys WRT300 Router, no encryption no mac filtering
Lynksys Wireless adapter 300N serries

Customer wireless not connecting with internet access. Tried Linksys software and Zero Config (Windows) to manage wireless connections.
ipconfig /all shows the Wireless adapter without a Default gateway. But it has an IP and valid DNS servers.

Plug in an ethernet cable while the PC is on and it connects and congifures fine with internet access.

Restart the computer and neither device gets a default gateway.

Remove the cable from laptop (problem machine) and connected to a desktop with TCP\IP setting set to automatic and it does fine, even after a restart.

I then ran the “netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt” command to reset the TCP\IP stack. Then I had customer reboot. Wireless card again did not obtain default gateway. Reconnected Ethernet cable and it picked up fine.

Remove all Linksys software and let windows reinstall the hardware. After completing install customer used windows to connect to available wireless networks and it said it was connected fine. No connection to the internet though.  Ipconfig /all revealed the default gateway was blank again (still)

I could not try another external card or flash the router because I was working remotely.

This is an issue all over the place for years and no one seems to have posted a valid resolution or explanation.

Because I cannot readily apply any solution suggestions I will have to award points based on the likelihood of the solution based on the explanation and supporting ideas or facts
