Data can not be read - Says card not formatted, you want to format?

Hi,
I have a camera with Toshiba memeory card through which i took some photos. Now i want to transfer to my Pc, but when I insert the card into the Memory card reader it says, the card is not formatted, you want to format...?. I can not see my pictures as well as can not transfer also. This problem comes very often with the memory card.
what would be the reason, is it becoz of defectice memory card ( i can not beleive defectice card as it is from Toshiba....)
