Can you downgrade from HDMI to XVGA using a DVI-I connector?

Hello Experts,
I just bought a computer that has no SVGA output, only HDMI; I want to connect it for a PPT presentation but the projector only has SVGA port (old).
I am using a cable that converts HDMI to DVI-Male and a connector from DVI-Female to XVGA-Male. The problem is that I can't see anything on the projector; is there a way to make this work?
