cannot connect to the configuration database KB948110

We are receiving "cannot connect to the configuration database " messages after installing the KB948110 update to our sharepoint services server.  I am at a loss.  

The following infomation was showing up the last few weeks in the log, but was just as an information event.

After the install these errors show up as errors and are grouped together in a pattern everytime a user attempts to connect to the website.
