The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

nothing comes out of lp print

Asked by sunhux in Sun Solaris, Unix Setup

Tags: , , ,

Hi

I've set up a printer on our Solaris box using admintool (other than printer name,
all other properties for this printer follows that of an existing working printer as
shown by admintool GUI).  It's a HP Laserjet with JetDirect network port
connected to the network.

The printer name is then defined in the /etc/hosts with the IP address of the
JetDirect (following an existing working printer).

When I test print using root using the command below, nothing was printed :

# lp -d slareghp1 /tmp/test.txt
request id is slareghp1-24421 (1 file(s))

Using ordinary account would give error :
$ lp -d slareghp1 /tmp/test.txt
request id is slareghp1-24421 (1 file(s))
UX:lp: ERROR: You are not allowed to use the destination
              "slareghp1".
TO FIX: Use the lpstat -p command to list all
known printers; you can use those marked
              "available".
$ ksh: syntax error: `(' unexpected

Also, from the same Sun server, I was able to  telnet
into the JetDirect's IP address (but this is not lp's port,
only port 23).

What Tcp port does "lp" uses when it send a print job
to a remote print server (ie JetDirect in this case)?

What should I do next to get it to work ?  Could it be
a firewall is on one of the subnet that prevented the
printing?  I probably can verify if I know the Tcp port
used by lp

Since I could telnet into this JetDirect, what's the command I
could issue to do a "test print" locally to the printer - just want
to verify that the user & I are talking about the same printer

More info :

A colleague just told me the likely Tcp port used for printing to
the JetDirect is Tcp 9100 & from the Solaris server, I could
establish port 9100 is reachable :
  boasun02:/etc >telnet slareghp1 9100
  Trying 10.51.19.140...
  Connected to slareghp1.
  Escape character is '^]'.

I telnet into the JetDirect & checked current configuration :
