The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Best practice for building XP/Vista boxes & taking image backups

Asked by RenovoIT in Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, Norton Ghost Backup Software, Windows Vista

Two very simple questions about building XP/Vista boxes and taking an image type backup of servers.

Question 1

It's been a while since I've had to build/backup workstations and I know concepts can move pretty quickly.

For 2k & XP I used to, install the OS, drives and a few base apps.  Sysprep, boot from a "DOS" boot disk with network drives and take a Ghost image.  I then booted the workstations I wanted to build with the "DOS" network disk, restored the image, updated the Sysprep questions, ran a VBS script to install MSI apps from Admin install points, ran Windows Update.

I guess things have changed.  Ghost now appears to install on workstations as a backup tool.  I suspect it's increasing more difficult to get hold of DOS drivers.  Plus I've not created a DOS network boot disk for years (and Bart Boot Disks dont appear work on our HP Proliant Servers, protected memory).  Any quick points on how its best achieved now?

Question 2

I want to backup (i.e. take an image) of a few workstations and servers before installing Symantec System Recovery.  I really would prefer to do with performing this in a Windows PE environment as opposed to DOS.  Ghost, Pargon and a couple of other cloning apps now seem to require an install before being able to take an image.  Are there any good cloning apps that can take an image from a boot WinPE CD without being installed first?
