The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

NAS (Linksys NSLU2) with 2 IDE-HD 320GB // One disk does not boot (ext3)

Asked by go4java in rSync Backup Utility, Linux Setup, Computer Hard Drives

I've a 2 disk NAS as described in the subject.
I realized one disk is down since 2 weeks (and no rsync since then...).
I tried to connect the disk to my WinXP Prof. desktop with the tool http://www.fs-driver.org/.
This seemed to work and I added a drive letter to the faulty disk.
But when I tried to read the disk, an error 'disk needs to be formatted appeared'...
So I followed the trobleshooting section and started the mountdiag.exe tool with the following message:

The volume has an Ext2/Ext3 file system, but the Ext2 IFS 1.11 software did not
mount it because there is at least one incompat feature flag set. The Ext2
IFS software does not implement:
* needs_recovery *
Here we have an Ext3 file system which has transactions left in its journal. A
pure Ext2 driver must not access such a volume which is in that state (to
prevent data loss!).
You may solve it by mounting it on Linux (which has a kernel with Ext3
support). Be sure that you cleanly dismount it, before you shutdown Linux.
After that the Ext2 IFS software should be able to access the volume.

What's the easiest and quickest way to get access to the files (l still have a backup available)?
I fear the disk is somehow damaged, since it runs 24x7 since 2 yrs. and is consumer Trekstor hardware. Any suggestion?Start Free Trial
