The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

External and Offsite Backup solution for Professional Photographer

Asked by midgetsaur in Storage Technology, Backup & Restore Software, rSync Backup Utility

Good day everyone,

I run a small computer consulting firm, and lately I have been getting many requests from professional photographers looking for an effective external and offisite backup solution.  Due to the nature of their business online backup solutions are completely out of the question. (They average about 20 - 30GB of data a week)

What I am looking for is two solutions.   A short term, daily backup, and a long term archival backup solution.

The short term backup solution would be two fold.   Data duplicated on site twice, (mirror or raid of some sort, and an off site copy.

Here's what I came up with quickly, but cannot find any product that can do this.  A hardware solution that acts like an external hard drive but mirrored, and also has the ability to generate an offsite media.  For example, the best solution would be an external raid (mirror preferably), that would have a slot that you can place an 3rd drive.  This third drive would get a 3rd duplication of the data, that can be removed, and taken off site.

This is just an example of what I would like, but if you have good suggestions (I don't want the standard answer of using several external hard drives and duplicate the data, and take one off site.)   I want something much simpler, and user friendly.   An automated system where the photographer comes into their office in the morning, plugs in hard drive into an external type device, and when they leave the office 4 or 5 hours later, they have a complete backup of all the date up to date.

The key here is that the data needs to be duplicated 3 times.  two copies in the office (raid or mirror),and one copy off site.

The second part is the long term archival solution.  I've considered DDS, REV, and all those types of solutions, but none seem user friendly, and affordable for their budgets..   This one I'm leaving wide open for someone to be creative.

Thanks all.
