The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Acer, Aspire, 6920, BIOS, MBR

Hello Experts,

I've bought a new Acer Aspire 6920 about 2 weeks ago and yesterday when I came home from work it did not want to boot. It had run perfectly at work. It was basically hanging at the loading Vista screen, so I've been trying to fix it since then. Here's what I've done:

- Found out, using the Vista Repair Console, that there was a problem with a bad driver that it could not fix.
- Rebooting in safe mode: Hang on the file after crcdisk.sys is loaded. (I was able to get it to boot properly once after the first time I had entered safe mode, but explorer.exe froze and I had to reboot)
- Tried messing around with UBCD (something I regret now) and managed to f**k up the MBR or BIOS - accidentally got into: "Smart BootManager V3.7.1" - did nothing else than pressing Ctrl-Q to exit.

Now my comp does not find any hard disk drives to boot from at all. ("Operating System not found") When I run the Windows Recovery Console it tells me that I have no hard drives. And using UBCD4Win gives me the same answer.

I have not opened up my computer and resetted the CMOS, but since it's a laptop and there's warranty issues about opening it up - I'd rather not do that.

My question is, is there any way I can salvage my computer without having to send it in for service? Like properly using the "Smart BootManager" to fix the MBR? Or reset the CMOS by removing the battery?Start Free Trial
