The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't assign drive letter for external hard drive in Vista

Asked by introublehan in Computer Hard Drives, Windows Vista, Removable Backup Media

I recently got a new ASUS laptop with Vista, and I was trying to move files from my old computer's two external hard drives I had. One is FAT 32 and the other is NTFS. Both of them didn't show up in the Vista's Computer so I went looking around. So far,

1. Device driver recognizes them both as disk drives and USB storage devices
2. Disk management shows them at correct volumes
3. Tried uninstalling on the device manager, disconnecting, and reconnecting (upon which vista reinstalled it automatically)
4. Turning off some of the security crap
5. Double checking on old computer to see if there was some hardware issues with the device
6. Changing USB ports (tried all three)

But I can't assign a letter for the drive for some reason. I try, and it will show (H:) or (I:) or something next to the hard drive for a second, and an autoplay icon will briefly flash on the task bar, but then it would close and the letter would dissapear.

PS. I just remembered the first time I plugged it in, the autoplay window popped up completely and I had options, from which I chose 'explore'. I was browsing so I didnt pay attention until I actually got around to it, when I realized it hadn't actually opened up explore. That was the only time it happened.Start Free Trial
