My external hard drive (AcomData HD080UES-72) is no longer recognized by my desktop (Compaq Evo 500D ~ Windows XP). Here are the facts:
I never had a problem with it until today when I unplugged my computer and associated components to roll my desk into another room. When I plugged everything back in, the driver "disappeared". I saw in another forum that an AcomData rep advised someone to not turn the external hard drive on until you need to. But, mine is always on, always has been, even when I shut down my computer. Again, I have never had a problem at all until my unplugging episode.
The cables are fine. The connections are fine. I re-downloaded drivers from AcomData's website. I did a "Restore". I checked both "My Computer" and "Disk Management" and the hard drive is not in either place for me to do anything with. I've re-booted multiple times and consecutively on occasion, with and without the hard drive plugged in, but still nothing. I've uninstalled all USB devices and reinstalled based on suggestions I read, to no avail. My desktop does not recognize it as new hardware.
I may be leaving something out. But, bottom line, it had something to do with me unplugging the system as simple as that may sound. Maybe I had to shut down the hard drive first?? It's the same old sob story that you have probably heard a thousand times, but that hard drive holds all of my photos and music. After coming up empty perusing forums for what to do, I have resorted to the experts.
I hope someone can help me. Thank you in advance for your help.
