The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Does sub folder depth affect search engine ranking?

Asked by mike99c in Internet Search Engine Optimization, Search Engines

Hello,
I would like to know if the number of sub folders within a web site affects the search engine score of a page.

When I last looked at this over a year ago I understood that search engines would score a page higher if it appears closer to the root folder.

For example, if the following pages were identical and all other things being equal, would the page appearing to be closer to the root folder (Example 2) have a higher relevance than the page perceived to be deeper down (Example 1)?

Example 1: www.foo.com/level1/level2/level3/level4/index.asp

Example 2: www.foo.com/level1/level2/index.asp

The main reason I ask is that I am developing database driven pages and will need to do a URL rewrite. There is a choice between converting the query string separators into forward slash separators or special characters which make the links appear to reside on the top level.

For example, say I have the following dynamic URL:
www.foo.com/index.asp?ItemID=343445&CatID=75874857

Subfolder rewrite would be:
www.foo.com/index.asp/ItemID/343445/CatID/75874857

However the encoded rewrite would be:
www.foo.com/index.asp-Q-ItemID-E-343445-A-CatID-E-75874857

I am concerned that although the sub folder rewrite looks cleaner it would score less search engine relevance than the encoded which appears to reside on the root level.

I would appreciate any links to evidence which supports any recomended solution.Start Free Trial
