SEO canonical issues - 301 redirect

I  have been advised that we are facing canonical issues with our website.  Bascially I have been advised that you can type http://buyberlin.co.uk or http://www.buyberlin.co.uk into a webpage.

I have been advised that this means that when google indexes the webpage it will appear that there are two sites and this will affect rankings.

I checked with the support team at 1and1 and they advised that they do not support but it can be done with ASP script and kindly provded me with a link to an article.

Apparently the code i need to put in each page (can someome pleaes confirm that this is correct) is:

Now im not sure how this works - and im possibly missing the point the domain i purchased was www.buyberlin.co.uk (with the ws) does that mean that when someone types http://buyberlin.co.uk they still hit www.buyberlin.co.uk index page and then get forced to the new one automatically thus eliminating the appearance of duplication?  or should i change the code to redirect automatically to http://buyberlin.co.uk (without the w's?)

Hope somone has a clue what im goin on about!
