The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Output live mail.log file  to a browser using php "tail -f"

Asked by webenerds in PHP and Databases, PHP Scripting Language

Need to output the mail.logs from postfix to a web browser.  At present I'm using the following scheme:

<head>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh"
CONTENT="30; URL=http://11.5.254.34/tailfile.php">
</head>
<?
$data = file_get_contents ('/var/www/test/testfile.txt');
echo nl2br(htmlspecialchars($data));
?>

The problem is I'd like to use something to the equivilent of tail -f /var/log/mail.log inside PHP.  I've tried using the following:

exec("tail -f /var/log/mail.log");

And nothing is displayed.  I've edited visudo so that www-data can execute tail w/o a password but the page never loads.  I'm guessing it's because the -f never quits and will eventually the browser will time out.

I found a script that is very dated but it wont work w/ php5, link to that script here.
http://www.phppost.net/php-scrips/read-tail-file-t42268.html

It errors out with an error that reads "unexpected t_sl in line 4".  Being new to php I have no idea what that means and googling hasnt helped me solve that problem yet.  I think it may be due to the version of PHP it was written for vs what I'm running it on, but I'm not sure.

I dont want to incorporate an third party app that will display in the window, such as java or something similar.  I'd like to run it all in PHP if possible.

Environment is as follows:
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
PHP Version 5.2.4-2ubuntu5
